Geppetto

Game Description

Nier Replicant is an action-adventure rpg and was developed by Square Enix.

In this game, the player takes control over Nier, a kind young man who sets out with Grimoire Weiss, a strange talking book, to search for the "Sealed verses" in order to save his sister Yonah, who fell terminally ill to the Black Scrawl.

One Page Design Definition

The purpose of a one-page design is to explain/show something (f.e. a game mechanic) with just one page.

My Goal

Nier Replicant has some very interesting boss fights with challenging attack patterns that are extremely fun to analyze and memorize.

As a kind of analyzing exercise, I decided to take one of the boss fights apart and make a one-page design about it.

I pretended that I am one of the designers on the team, which wants to use this one-pager to visualize the different attack phases and document all important information about this boss.

One The Left Side

For each of the three phases, I started with a simple drawing of the boss's appearance / and other enemies included.

Right next to the drawing I made sure to highlight the three most important facts about each phase.

First I documented what enemy the player will fight.
This was important since Gepetto will be taking a break in phase two and gets shortly replaced by minions and turrets.

After that, I mention the weak point of the current enemy, such as Geppettos hands in phase one.

And lastly, I wrote down the strategy/kind of attack the player needs to use to win this phase.

The Top Section

I started with a small summary about the bosses origin and documented some important information at the very top of my page.

Details such as the area he is encountered in and quests that are related to the boss are , in my opinion, best presented at the very beginning, since they help you place the enemy in your mind and make everything feel more complete.

Also, if this was a real one-page design my co-workers have to work with, I'd want them to have everything they need to know in one place.

This doesn't only safe time but also energy and just makes everything a little less complicated.

On The Right Side

On the right side of the one-page design, I made sure to explain every single attack of each phase.

The first box includes a short description of the attack as well as how Geppetto / the attack moves and behaves.

The second box describes the countermeasures of the attack.

In this case, the player needs to dodge/run away from the laser while also picking up bombs and throwing them into the enemy's mouth.

I wanted to keep everything as short as possible, especially on a big one-page design like this one, since it can be very tiring to read everything and important information tend to get lost in long sentences.
